He may have been there some time before that 2 CONC event and probably had been, but we have found no evidence of his 2 CONC presence until then. We have found no evidence of his parent age, 2 CONC birthplace or previous condition. There is no evidence that he was 2 CONC related to either John of Plymouth, who was near his own age, nor 2 CONC William, the ancestor of the New York branch of the family. Some hints 2 CONC or suggestions of a possible solution of the question of his nativity 2 CONC will find mention in the prefatory part of this volume, but since they 2 CONC are purely speculative, we do not place them here. The first entry 2 CONC relating to his real estate in Wethersfield, CT is the following 2 CONC record: 2 CONT The 2d month & 28th daie 1641 the lands of Josias Churchell lying in 2 CONC Wethersfield on Connecticut River. One pece whereon his howse 2 CONC standeth con; six acrs more or less the ands (the ends) abutt against 2 CONC the hie waie west & great mea: east the sids against the waie into the 2 CONC great mea: south & the howse of John Jessiope(Jessup) north. (town 2 CONC records B pg 204) 2 CONT The homestead was on the east side of high street, on the north corner 2 CONC of an ancient road leading to the "Great Meadow" and the river. It 2 CONC faced the southern extremity of the common, which stretched north from 2 CONC his house to the river. But he did not reside here all his life, for, 2 CONC under the date December, 1659, we find this entry in the records: 2 CONT The hom lot of Josias Churchell which he bought of Mr. Tantor 2 CONC (Taintor) which was Gildersleeves formerly living in Wethersfield, on 2 CONC Connecticut River. (town records B pg 205) 2 CONT This homestead of Richard Gildersleeves was on the west side of High 2 CONC Street, a few doors south of Mr. Churchill's earlier home. 2 CONT 2 CONT * The old records have the name Churchell for the first three 2 CONC generations, but we have adopted the later, general form, in this and 2 CONC in other names. 2 CONT 2 CONT It is difficult to glean biographical material from the meagre and 2 CONC matter of fact records of our forefathers. Inn Hinman's genealogical 2 CONC account of the early Connecticut Settlers, he says Josiah Churchill 2 CONC "He was a gentleman of more than a medium estate for the time in which 2 CONC he lived, and of reputation in the colony." He was active and useful 2 CONC in public affairs, though not holding the highest positions. He was a 2 CONC juror of the Particular Court in 1643, 1649 and 1651, at the Quarter 2 CONC Court 1664 and 1665 and at the County Court 1666, 1670 and 1675. He 2 CONC was chosen a Constable in 1657 and 1670, and was elected one of the 2 CONC two town surveyors in 1666 and 1673. 2 CONT He executed his will on the 17 th of November, 1683 and died before 2 CONC January 1687. The inventory of his estate was taken January 5 1687 by 2 CONC James Treat and John Buttolph, selectmen of Wethersfield, and was 2 CONC found to amount to 618 pounds, 12 shillings and 6 pence. This 2 CONC inventory shoews that at his death he owned two home lots and two 2 CONC hundred and ten acres of land. He left his son Joseph "that house and 2 CONC home lot he now lives on" together with "all other buildings thereon." 2 CONC He left to Joseph also several other pieces of land, and a fifty acre 2 CONC lot, "at ye west end of Wethersfield bounds" in the newly settled 2 CONC tract which later became the parish of Newington. He left to his son 2 CONC Benjamin a number of pieces of land, and the old homestead at the 2 CONC decease of his mother. According to the custom of the times his 2 CONC daughters were given certain shares of "movable estate." Among the 2 CONC items in the inventory are " a great Chist," and "2 bibells and other 2 CONC books." This "great Chist" probably reappears in the inventory of his 2 CONC son Joseph whis specifies a chest with the initials "J. C." as well as 2 CONC a piece of "Turkie work" 2 CONT Mention is made of his children Joseph, Benjamin, Mary Church, 2 CONC Elizabeth Buck, Anne Rice and Sarah Wickham. 2 CONT 2 CONT Josiah Churchill, above mentioned, married Elizabeth Foote, daughter 2 CONC of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Deming) (Foote), who died at Wethersfield, 2 CONC Sept, 8, 1700, aged about eighty-four years. 2 CONT 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1616 2 PLAC Meston, Dorset, England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1 JAN 1686 2 PLAC Wethersfield, CT 1 BURI 2 PLAC Newington, CT 1 FAMS @F1@ 0 @I2@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Foote/ 2 GIVN Elizabeth 2 SURN Foote 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 8 SEP 1616 2 PLAC St. James, Colchester, Essex, England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 8 SEP 1700 2 PLAC Wethersfield, CT 1 BAPM 2 DATE 14 JAN 1617 2 PLAC Colchester, Essex, England 1 FAMS @F1@ 0 @I3@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Mary 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 MAR 1639 2 PLAC Wethersfield, CT 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1690 2 PLAC Hadley, Deerfield, MA 1 FAMS @F5@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I4@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Elizabeth 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 15 MAY 1642 2 PLAC Wethersfield, CT 1 FAMS @F3@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I5@ INDI 1 NAME Hannah /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Hannah 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 NOV 1644 2 PLAC Wethersfield, CT 1 DEAT 2 DATE BEF NOV 1683 2 PLAC Wallingford, CT 1 FAMS @F11@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I6@ INDI 1 NAME Ann /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Ann 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1647 2 PLAC Wethersfield, CT 1 FAMS @F13@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I7@ INDI 1 NAME Joseph /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Joseph 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 NOTE 2 CONT NOTE: NOTE: Born in Wethersfield, Conn., Dec 7, 1649. In an 2 CONC indenture dated Nov. 30, 1668, he is styled "husbandman." That he was a man of ability and 2 CONC influenceis shown by his gradual advancement to places of trust and 2 CONC influence. The Wethersfield records show that at the age of thirty he 2 CONC was chosen one of the town surveyors; three years later he was one of 2 CONC the assessors, and next year, 1684, he was made collector of taxes; in 2 CONC 1689 was chosen constable, assessor again in 1695, and at the annual 2 CONC meeting, held Dec. 27 1697, "Sergt." Joseph Churchell was chosen 2 CONC "Selectman," and again re-elected in 1698, and was still holding that 2 CONC office whwn he died, April 1, 1699, at the age of forty-nine years. 2 CONC The above date of death appears in the heading of his inventory. His 2 CONC estate was valued at four hundred and sixty-one pounds, and his heirs, 2 CONC according to a memorandum at the end of his inventory, were the 2 CONC relict, Mary, Nathaniel, Mary Edwards, Elizabeth Butler, Dinah, 2 CONC Samuel, Joseph, David, Jonathan, and Hannah. 2 CONT 2 CONT Married at Wethersfield, May 13, 1674, Mary (_______). Long and 2 CONC diligent search by many different investigators has not brought to 2 CONC light the surname of Joseph Churchill's wife. She survived him and 2 CONC lived to advanced age. She is mentioned as "Widow Mary, Senior," in 2 CONC the settlement of her son, Nathaniel's, estate, April 2, 1728. At the age of thirty-seven 2 CONC years he was chosen selectman, and for years served in that office. He settled first in Sheffield, Mass., about 1746, 2 CONC where he married next year, and labored industriously at his farm as 2 CONC well as occasionally at the making of shoes. Here he remained until 2 CONC his family had increased to ten children, six sons and four daughters, 2 CONC when he removed to Vermont. The story of his subsequent career in the 2 CONC new home and his stirring adventures in the border warfare in the 2 CONC Revolution has been published many years ago by his grandson, Amos 2 CONC Churchill, son of Joseph, in sketches of the history of Hubbardton, 2 CONC Vt. (the sketches were published first in the "Vermont Historical 2 CONC Gazetteer," Vol III.) We quote the account from the time of the 2 CONC removal from Sheffield. 2 CONT 2 CONT My grandfather having a large family, most of them boys, and some 2 CONC married 2 CONT and beginning to have families, he was anxious to provide for them 2 CONC farms if 2 CONT possible. And, as land was cheap in the then new state of Vermont, he 2 CONC sold his 2 CONT farm in Sheffield, estimated at three thousand dollars($3,000), to a 2 CONC man by 2 CONT the name of Hickok (who pretended to own a larrge quantity oof land in 2 CONC the 2 CONT town of Hubbardton, Rutland County , Vt.), and took a quitclaim deed 2 CONC of 2 CONT three thousand (3,000) acres of land lying in Hubbardton aforesaid. He 2 CONC had 2 CONT previously been through the town with Hickok and others. The next 2 CONC season he 2 CONT came on with his surveyor, and located his three thousand (3,000) 2 CONC acres in a 2 CONT different part of the town, chose his place of residence, cleared a 2 CONC piece of 2 CONT land, built a log house, and moved on in the spring of 1775, and went 2 CONC to 2 CONT clearing up his farm. He had been in possesion for a little more than 2 CONC two 2 CONT years, and was still attending to his business, when a detatchment of 2 CONC soldiers 2 CONT arrived on the morning of the 7th of July 1777, warning him of danger, 2 CONC and 2 CONT advising him to escape. They were two miles north of Warren's 2 CONC encampment. 2 CONT Upon recieving the information they started off as fast as possible, 2 CONC the women 2 CONT and children mounted on three horses and the men on foot. They had 2 CONC gone 2 CONT but a little on their way when the firing commenced. They all pushed 2 CONC on as 2 CONT fast as possible until they were among the bullets, and two of their 2 CONC horses 2 CONT were wounded. The old lady, when she saw that her horse was wounded, 2 CONT jumped from his back, exclaiming, "I wish I had a gun, I would give 2 CONC them 2 CONT what they want." They all retreated except John and Silas who were in 2 CONC the 2 CONT battle. Silas was taken prisoner, but John made his escape and went 2 CONC back to 2 CONT their house. Here they were all surprised, and were taken prisoners by 2 CONC a Tory 2 CONT Captain named Sherwood, with a party of painted Tories and Indians who 2 CONT had been lurking on the hills east of the house during the battle. 2 CONC After 2 CONT plundering the house of all the provisions, most of the clothing, and 2 CONT everything else that they could make use of, the barbarous wretch 2 CONC ordered the 2 CONT woman and children to leave the house or he would burn the whole 2 CONC together; 2 CONT at any rate the house should be burnt. One of the young women taking 2 CONC her 2 CONT bed in her arms proceeded with a heavy heart to the door, let it fall, 2 CONC saying, " 2 CONT You have taken all our men prisioners, and all our provisions, and now 2 CONC how 2 CONT can you be so cruel as to burn our house?"So saying she fainted. This, 2 CONC with 2 CONT the tears and entreaties of the others, so softened his savage heart 2 CONC that he left 2 CONT them their shelter, but deprived them of their provisions and much of 2 CONC their 2 CONT clothing. My grandfather was taken some distance from the house into 2 CONC the 2 CONT woods by the Indians and tied to a tree and dry brush piled around 2 CONC him, they 2 CONT often saying to him, "Tell us where your flour is, you old rebel." 2 CONC Sherwood 2 CONT suspected that he had some concealed which thay had not yet found. 2 CONC After 2 CONT keeping him here for two or three hours, questioning him about his 2 CONC flour, 2 CONT threatening and taunting him, and he constantly asserting that he had 2 CONC none, 2 CONT that they had taken it all, etc., and while in the act of setting fire 2 CONC to the brush, 2 CONT Sherwood came forward and ordered them to desist, being thoroughly 2 CONT convinced that he had none. His cattle and hogs were all killed and 2 CONC all such 2 CONT parts as they could use were taken, each one being ordered to take as 2 CONC much as 2 CONT he could carry. Willeam was lame, having cut his foot a few days 2 CONC before, and 2 CONT could not travel, and they released him. Ezekiel being a small boy, 2 CONC they sent 2 CONT him back. The others were marched off to Ticonderoga. The prisoners, 2 CONT inhabitants of Hubbardton, were Samuel Churchill, the father, John and 2 CONC Silas, 2 CONT his sons, Messrs. Uriah Hickok, Henry Keeler, and Elijah Kellogg. The 2 CONT women and children being left destitute of provisions could not remain 2 CONC there. 2 CONT The British Tories and Indians being south, they feared to take a 2 CONC southern 2 CONT direction. One of their horses became lame from the wound he had 2 CONC received, 2 CONT could not travel. They, with what clothing they had left, started off 2 CONC as well as 2 CONT they could with their two horses. The company consisted of four women 2 CONC , two 2 CONT boys (one thirteen years old being lame, and the other eleven years 2 CONC old), two 2 CONT small children (one three years old, and the other but a few months). 2 CONC Those 2 CONT who could not walk were mounted on the two horses with what baggage 2 CONC they 2 CONT had. Thus equipped, this desolate family started off on their drery 2 CONC and 2 CONT wearisome journey for the place of their former residence in 2 CONC Sheffield. But, 2 CONT instead of taking a southern direction through Bennington, etc., which 2 CONC they 2 CONT feared to do on account of the enemy, they took an eastern direction 2 CONC through 2 CONT the wilderness, across the Green Mountains to the Connecticut River at 2 CONC No.4, 2 CONT now Charlestown, N H; then down the river south to Springfield, then 2 CONC across 2 CONT the mountains again to Sheffield, and the place of their former 2 CONC residence, a 2 CONT distance as they travelled of more than three hundred and fifty (350) 2 CONC miles. 2 CONT Most of the way there were no roads, and but few inhabitants. Their 2 CONC progress 2 CONT was slow and distressing, but the old lady, being a resolute woman, 2 CONC generaled 2 CONT the expedition with much fortitude and perseverance. The first night 2 CONC they 2 CONT stopped at Col. Benjamin Cooley's, in Pittsford. He was very kind, and 2 CONT refreshed them with such as his log house afforded. The second day 2 CONC they 2 CONT arrived at the fort in Rutland. Here they were furnished with some 2 CONC provisions. 2 CONT The third night they encamped in the woods on the mountain. The fourth 2 CONT night they arrived at Captain Coffin's, in Cavendish. Here they 2 CONC stopped two 2 CONT days, and were the recipients of his hospitality. And so on, from 2 CONC place to 2 CONT place, until in about three weeks they arrived safely at the place of 2 CONC destination, 2 CONT among their friends in Sheffield. 2 CONT 2 CONT The men, prisoners at Ticonderoga, were put to work in the daytime 2 CONC where 2 CONT they could be with safety, at night were confined in cells. My 2 CONC grandfather and 2 CONT Mr. Hickok were set to boating wood across the lake. At first, for a 2 CONC while, a 2 CONT number of British soldiers would go with them, but they, working 2 CONC faithfully 2 CONT and manifesting no discontent, were at lenght sent off with but one 2 CONC soldier. 2 CONT They persuaded him to go with them, and fastening thier boat on the 2 CONC eastern 2 CONT shore of the lake they all left. My grandfather and Mr. Hickok went to 2 CONC their 2 CONT places of residence in Hubbardton. Here they found nothing but 2 CONC desolation 2 CONT and putrefaction. On the floor if Mr. Hickok's house lay the putrid 2 CONC body of a 2 CONT dead man. That they buried, and then, proceeding over the 2 CONC battle-ground, they 2 CONT could discover nothing but a promiscuous mass of scattered fragments 2 CONC of 2 CONT men, clothing, firearms, and direful desolation. Proceeding still 2 CONC futher to the 2 CONT place of my grandfather's house where he had left his family, and all 2 CONC that he 2 CONT held dear on earth, what a heart-rendering scene did he behold! 2 CONC Nothing was 2 CONT to be seen but death, desolation, and destruction. Here, where a few 2 CONC weeks before was a happy family, and all in health and prosperity, now 2 CONC no living creature could be found. The carcasses of his animals were 2 CONC lying here and there in a state of putrefaction; his harvest had 2 CONC ripened and was perishing; and nothing was left but what was 2 CONC heart-sickening to the sensitive feelings of two escaped, hungry, 2 CONC weary, and desponding searchers of consolation. The whole town was 2 CONC searched, and not a solitary being was left of whom to inquire. They 2 CONC left this dreary, heart-sickening scene, and proceeded to Castleton. 2 CONC Here Mr. Hicock found his family, but my grandfather, not finding his, 2 CONC and gaining no intelligence of them, wended his weary way, on foot and 2 CONC alone, to the south, one hundred and thirty(130) long miles, through 2 CONC dangers that beset him on every side, to the place from which he had 2 CONC formerly moved. Here he found, with a grateful heart, that they had 2 CONC arrived some days before, safe and all in good health. His two sons, 2 CONC John and Silas, remained prisoners until October, when Silas was 2 CONC retaken by Colonel Brown. In the fall, after the capture of Burgoyne, 2 CONC my grandfather moved his family back to Castleton, ten miles from his 2 CONC home. He saved some of his corn and potatoes, cut and laid up some 2 CONC poor hay for his horses, and in the winter moved to his place. Here he 2 CONC remained without interruption until the close of the war. When the 2 CONC town began to be infested with land claimants almost as destructive as 2 CONC the Tories and Indians, on examining his title, he found it worthless, 2 CONC as the man of whom he bought it had no good title to any land in the 2 CONC town. He had given his children each a lot of one hundred(100) acres, 2 CONC and on ten lots they had made a beginning. These were held by the 2 CONC "quieting act." Six more he bought the second time. The rest were 2 CONC given up. He built the first frame barn and the second frame house. 2 CONC The boards for the barn were drawn twelve and one-half miles on an ox 2 CONC sled, and the nails were picked up from the ruins of Fort Ticonderoga 2 CONC after it was burnt. His children, all but one, settled in the town, 2 CONC where they all lived until after his death, except Samuel, who died 2 CONC before. After settling his children, he retired from business and 2 CONC lived a number of years, enjoying a competence, to the advanced age of 2 CONC eighty years. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 27 APR 1721 2 PLAC Newington Parish, CT 1 DEAT 2 DATE JAN 1801 2 PLAC Hubbardton, VT 1 FAMS @F186@ 1 FAMC @F48@ 0 @I217@ INDI 1 NAME Charles /Churchill/ 2 NPFX Captain 2 GIVN Charles 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 NOTE 2 CONT NOTE: NOTE: Born in Newington Parish, Dec. 31, 1723, and died there 2 CONC Oct. 29, 1802. A detailed sketch of the life of Capt. Charles 2 CONC Churchill would be almost the same as a history of the Newington 2 CONC Parish for the last half of the eighteenth century. He was notably a 2 CONC leading citizen in the parish, of high patriotic spirit and excellent 2 CONC abilities. For thirteen years in succession he was a member of the 2 CONC Newington Society Committee, and after 1781 he was the presiding 2 CONC officer until 1801, the year before his death. To many public offices 2 CONC of trust and resposibility was added that of Deacon of the church, to 2 CONC which he was chosen Aug. 31, 1786. At the session of the General 2 CONC Assembly, May, 1762, he was appointed captain of the Tenth Company or 2 CONC "trainband," in the Sixth Connecticut Regiment, which office he filled 2 CONC for twenty years. 2 CONT At the beginning of the Revolutioary War he was on the first committee 2 CONC appointed at the town meeting convened June 16, 1774, to consider the 2 CONC resolution passed by the Colonial House of Representatives, on the 2 CONC second Thursday of May preceding, concerning the impending war. 2 CONT In all the stirring events following, he was among the foremost of the 2 CONC citizens in his unselfish endeavors and sacrifices for the good of the 2 CONC people and country. The records of the town, and traditions in the 2 CONC family, show that he was untiring in his efforts to raise men for the 2 CONC service and to procure food and clothing for them, and for their 2 CONC families while they were in the field. 2 CONT It is related that he several times entertained his company at his 2 CONC fine old house, and on these occasions the five great baking ovens 2 CONC were kept going at once, and that in the largest oven, in the cellar, 2 CONC they roasted a whole ox. 2 CONT In the "Record of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution" he is 2 CONC listed as Captain of one of the militia companies which turned out to 2 CONC repel Tryon's invasion of New Haven, July 5, 1779, and he also appears 2 CONC in his office as captain in active service in the Sixth Regiment, but 2 CONC unfortunately we have no other particulars of his service in the 2 CONC field, evidently much of his time in active service. It is related 2 CONC that at one time when he was in camp with three of his sons, his wife 2 CONC wrote him of the difficulty she found in carrying on the farm without 2 CONC their aid. "But," answered the captain, "I have left you Joseph and 2 CONC Benjamin," meaning his youngest sons, Silas and Solomon, and showing 2 CONC the spirit of the loyal patriot. 2 CONT During the last twenty years of his life, his name appears on the 2 CONC records of the Society with the title "Esquire," showing that he had 2 CONC taken up the dignity and duties of a justice of the peace, in place of 2 CONC his military duties. He collected a library of law books as a 2 CONC neccessary adjunct to his practice, some of which are still in 2 CONC existence. His will, a document of considerable length, is entirely in 2 CONC his own hand. His estate was appraised at $3,834.80, by Abel Andrus 2 CONC and Lemuel Whitlesey. Besides managing a farm of one hundred and 2 CONC twenty acres, Captain Churchill conducted a tannery, which in the tax 2 CONC lists was liberally assessed as a "faculty," or trade. 2 CONT It is to be regretted that there are no portraits of Captain Charles 2 CONC or of his wife. Enough is known of him, however, to give the picture 2 CONC of a strong, brave, and manly life, forceful and efficient in all that 2 CONC made for a free and righteous government. The place he made for 2 CONC himself in the community of his day, the family he reared, the good 2 CONC name he left, and the things he accomplished, make his general 2 CONC character portrait, while the details may in part be filled in by 2 CONC hints here and there of peculiar or eccentric tendencies, the touch of 2 CONC humor in likening his sons to Jacob's, in the answer to his wife 2 CONC quoted above, and the tradition that in his family devotions he always 2 CONC prayed standing in front of the "bowfat" cupboard, in the north room, 2 CONC as the wainscotted parlor in his house was called. Of his wife, Mr. 2 CONC George D. Seymour, a descendant, writes: 2 CONT 2 CONT Some leaves sewed into a little book, found with other papers in 2 CONC Samuel Churchill's house, contain the followin entry which, in a way, 2 CONC takes the place of other portraiture. I do not identify the 2 CONC handwriting, and the entry is incomplete, but from the context I feel 2 CONC sure that these tributes were written by one of Samuel Churchill's 2 CONC children: 2 CONT "March 25, 1805. Feb. 10, Sunday, Grandmother came over to our house, 2 CONC said she did not feel very well & wanted that I should make her some 2 CONC tea, most of the family had gone to meeting. I think that was the last time that ever she came into our 2 CONC house; she was taken sick pretty soon after; she died March 19. She 2 CONC never spoke after Sunday afternoon till she died, Tuesday night (three 2 CONC o'clock) but was in the utmost distress that could be. O what a kind, kind mother we have 2 CONC lost. I think she was a tender of her grandchildren as own mothers 2 CONC are. Oh how often have I experienced her goodness, but not only me but 2 CONC all of her dear offspring Oh how often has she spoken kindly to me, 2 CONC -and took my hand and told me, that I was born to hard fortune. (She 2 CONC said my hands indicated hard labor.) I think I shall never forget my 2 CONC dear Grandmother, nor my Grandfather neither, -I think of him many 2 CONC times, - and particularly I have heard read, and in his prayers - he 2 CONC used to have that passage "Man Loveth Darkness rather than light 2 CONC because his deeds are evil," and many more passages, when I hear 2 CONC mentioned brings my Grandfather to mind. It is 2 CONC striking that they had six children living at their death, & only one 2 CONC that ever made any public profession of Religion, that one a minister, 2 CONC altho a minister he will not save his brethren from," 2 CONT 2 CONT The writing here breaks off. The Minister referred to was the Rev. 2 CONC Silas. the imtimation of the grandmother's interest in palmistry gives 2 CONC a natural touch to this simple and affectionate picture of her last 2 CONC days. 2 CONT 2 CONT Captain Charles Churchill married, Nov. 19, 1747, Lydia Belden, born 2 CONC May 1, 1730, daughter of Josiah and Mabel (Wright) Belden, and a 2 CONC lineal descendant of Richard Belden, of Wethersfield, the emigrant, 2 CONC while her paternal grandmother was Dorothy Willard, a descendant of 2 CONC Major Simon Willard, one of the founders of Concord, Mass., and 2 CONC notable as a magistrate, and a military officer, in the early annals 2 CONC of the Colony of Massachusetts. That we all have the 2 CONC same Father, so growing up I knew of all of them, with one exception, 2 CONC the brother that was born a year after me. His name at birth was 2 CONC Kevin, he was given up for adoption at the time of his birth. I did 2 CONC not find out about this sibling until I had my 30th birthday, that was 2 CONC when my mother decided to tell me. Since then I have been trying to 2 CONC locate him but have had no luck, I have had contact with most of my 2 CONC siblings through my life, we tend to fall in and out of each others 2 CONC lives over the years, I remember my mother always encouraging me to 2 CONC keep in touch with them, but for what ever reason we really have never 2 CONC been close, she would say things to me like, you will all need each 2 CONC other when your father and I and Claire are gone, she told me this 2 CONC several times while I was growing up. It was difficult for me as a 2 CONC child being the only one at home knowing I had brothers and sisters 2 CONC and they lived somewhere else, but I remember, always feeling a sense 2 CONC of pride knowing I had them. Many things have changed over the years 2 CONC and I am grateful to have the opportunity to get to know some of my 2 CONC brothers and sisters even if it was for a short time, because family 2 CONC is important and that is what I was brought up with. It didn't matter 2 CONC that we have different mothers, what mattered is that we are a 2 CONC "Family", and some just didn't feel this way, some have changed thier 2 CONC views, others just choose to leave things the way they are, and that 2 CONC is alright, because I am fortunate to know that I do have a Family. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 16 APR 1965 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 1 REFN Mel 1 OCCU Sales 1 EDUC Graduated from Dartmouth High School 1 RELI Catholic 1 FAMS @F102@ 1 FAMC @F101@ 0 @I390@ INDI 1 NAME Kevin Roderick /Brown/ 2 GIVN Kevin Roderick 2 SURN Brown 1 SEX M 1 NOTE 2 CONT NOTE: NOTE: Kevin was given up for adoption at the time of his birth. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 APR 1966 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 1 ADOP 2 DATE 1966 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 1 FAMC @F101@ 0 @I391@ INDI 1 NAME Francis Pascoal /Britto/ 2 GIVN Francis Pascoal 2 SURN Britto 1 SEX M 1 NOTE 2 CONT NOTE: NOTE: Francis' middle name Pascoal means Easter, and he was born 2 CONC on Easter Sunday that year. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 31 MAR 1929 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 28 MAR 1990 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 1 BURI 2 DATE 31 MAR 1990 2 PLAC St. John's Cemetary, New Bedford, MA 2 NOTE He is buried in plot # 484 1 REFN Frankie 1 OCCU Retired New Bedford Police Office 1 EDUC Graduated from Greater New Bedford Regional Technical High School (VOKE) 1 RELI Catholic 1 FAMS @F101@ 0 @I392@ INDI 1 NAME Roger Joseph /Marcotte/ 2 GIVN Roger Joseph 2 SURN Marcotte 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 13 JUN 1962 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 1 BAPM 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 2 NOTE St. Anthony's Church 1 CONF 2 PLAC New Bedford, MA 2 NOTE St. Joseph's Church 1 REFN Roger 1 OCCU Correction Officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1 EDUC Graduated from Greater New Bedford Regional Technical High School (VOKE) 1 RELI Catholic 1 FAMS @F102@ 0 @I405@ INDI 1 NAME Emily /Wilcox/ 2 GIVN Emily 2 SURN Wilcox 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 JUN 1792 1 FAMS @F105@ 0 @I406@ INDI 1 NAME John /Churchill/ 2 GIVN John 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I407@ INDI 1 NAME Frederick A. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Frederick A. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I408@ INDI 1 NAME Sylvester /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Sylvester 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I409@ INDI 1 NAME Laura E. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Laura E. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I410@ INDI 1 NAME Lucy W. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Lucy W. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I411@ INDI 1 NAME Ruth C. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Ruth C. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I412@ INDI 1 NAME Joseph /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Joseph 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I413@ INDI 1 NAME Emeline P. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Emeline P. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I414@ INDI 1 NAME Eunice V. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Eunice V. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F105@ 0 @I415@ INDI 1 NAME Benjamin /Goodrich/ 2 GIVN Benjamin 2 SURN Goodrich 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F106@ 0 @I416@ INDI 1 NAME Sally /Hall/ 2 GIVN Sally 2 SURN Hall 1 SEX F 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 SEP 1864 1 FAMS @F107@ 0 @I419@ INDI 1 NAME Sally Maria /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Sally Maria 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F107@ 0 @I420@ INDI 1 NAME William H. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN William H. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F107@ 0 @I421@ INDI 1 NAME Lucy /Taylor/ 2 GIVN Lucy 2 SURN Taylor 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F109@ 0 @I422@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Hannah /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Mary Hannah 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F109@ 0 @I423@ INDI 1 NAME Charles Russell /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Charles Russell 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F109@ 0 @I424@ INDI 1 NAME Edwin Franklin /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Edwin Franklin 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F109@ 0 @I425@ INDI 1 NAME Hannah /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Hannah 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F109@ 0 @I426@ INDI 1 NAME Joseph Miles /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Joseph Miles 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F109@ 0 @I427@ INDI 1 NAME Erasmas /Gladwin/ 2 GIVN Erasmas 2 SURN Gladwin 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F110@ 0 @I428@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Sage/ 2 GIVN Elizabeth 2 SURN Sage 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F111@ 0 @I429@ INDI 1 NAME Nathaniel Jr. /Churchill/ 2 GIVN Nathaniel Jr. 2 SURN Churchill 1 SEX M 1 NOTE 2 CONT NOTE: NOTE: Connecticut Revolutionary Pensionsers, compiled by the 2 CONC daughters of the American Revolution, page 39, lists Nathaniel wid. 2 CONC Lydia w22770. 2 CONT Born March 20, 1756. The tradition 2 CONC in the family is that, at the outbreak of the Revolution, he tried to 2 CONC enlist, but was rejected at first on account of his boyish appearance, 2 CONC but he succeeded later, and served in the company of Capt. Jonathan 2 CONC Hale, of Glastonbury, and was stationed at Boston January to March, 2 CONC 1776. He reenlisted in the Company of Captain Welles, and served in 2 CONC New York. His regiment was at the battles of Long Island and White 2 CONC Plains. He evidently acquired a fair education, and perhaps became a 2 CONC teacher in the succeeding years. After his first marriage he settled 2 CONC for a time in Glastonbury, where his first child was born. About 1790 2 CONC he removed to Hubbardton and occupied the farm which his father had 2 CONC taken up in 1775, but had abandoned when Vermont became involved in 2 CONC the border warfare. He lived for some years in the old log-house built 2 CONC by his father. On this homestead his seven children by the first wife 2 CONC were born, and here she died, leaving him with a family of seven 2 CONC children. Mr. Churchill then fitted himself for the ministry. It is 2 CONC said that he studied at Andover Theological Scholl, and by his church 2 CONC Covenant, dated at Andover, June 2, 1784, now in the possesion of a 2 CONC grandson, J. W. Hull, of Pittsfield, it seems that he was then a 2 CONC student. He probably took a special course. His son Norman writes us, 2 CONC in 1885; "After the death of my mother and father took an abbreviated 2 CONC course in theology, was ordained in 1807, and began to preach as a 2 CONC Congregational minister." He removed to Litchfield, N. Y., the same 2 CONC year. He was settled awhile at New Lebanon, N. Y. He was chaplain of 2 CONC the Twenty-seventh Regiment, New York militia, from 1810 to 1822, and 2 CONC served in the war of 1812, under Colonel Belinger, in the Black River 2 CONC campain, his son Norman going with him as his waiter. His last 2 CONC pastorate was at Winfield, N. Y. He died at Morrisville, N. Y., Sept. 2 CONC 29, 1828, and was buried at Winfield. He married 1st, in Wethersfield, 2 CONC Nov 2, 1786, Hannah Boardman, daughter of Charles and Abigail 2 CONC (Stillman) Boardman. She died at Hubbardton, Dec 10, 1804. Married 2d, 2 CONC Aug 28, 1807, Olive Tilden, daughter of John, and sister of Elam 2 CONC Tilden, the father of Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic presidential 2 CONC candidate of 1876. Married 3d, March 23, 1823, Mrs. Anna Eggleston, in 2 CONC Batavia, N. Y. She was a widow with a family of children, one of whom 2 CONC Norman Churchill married. 2 CONT 2 CONT ADDITIONAL NOTE: 2 CONT Our authority for statements above are letters of Norman Churchill, of 2 CONC Galesburg, IL, his son; letters from Professor Comstock, of Galesburg, 2 CONC IL, Mrs. Lucena A.
